Divy unaware of development role
Former Springbok coach Peter de Villiers said on Monday he had no knowledge of Sport Minister Fikile Mbalula earmarking him for a rugby developmental role at grass root level.
The Sowetan reported that Mbalula said during his department's budget vote speech in Parliament on Friday that he wanted De Villiers to assist with the development of the sport.
De Villiers said on Monday that he only got word of Mbalula's…

Boldness on the back burner for test series
AN OVER-RELIANCE on experience may have done little to advance the credentials of his predecessor, but new Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer isn't ready to go in a bold new direction just yet.
Meyer is desperate to make a winning start to his tenure against England next month and to that end he will assemble a purpose-built squad for the three tests.
Meyer is still pinning hopes on retired lock Victor Matfield, who is yet to be ruled out of the equation as the man to lead the side,…

Boks: Who will be up front?
With the June Test matches rapidly approaching we have taken a closer look at the candidates for selection from South Africa - starting with the big boys in the front row.
In less than a month's time the Springboks will run out to contest their first Test match under Heyneke Meyer, and as excited as everyone is about the new beginning there is also a fair amount of confusion around which players the new coach will select.
Meyer has made it clear that…

Du Preez: Bok selectors should look past me
World Cup-winning scrumhalf Fourie du Preez has urged Springboks coach Heyneke Meyer to pick Francois Hougaard instead of him for the home series against England next month.
Du Preez, who won the 2007 World Cup and plays for Japanese club Suntory Sungoliath, said that he wouldn't make himself unavailable for the three-test series but it was time for South Africa to go with younger players - starting with his former Bulls provincial teammate Hougaard.
"I'm well aware that we…

De Villiers impresses Meyer
Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer says that there is a “good possibility” that Jean de Villiers could play at outside centre against England next month, and that he has been impressed by his leadership ability.
Speaking on Thursday at the Sports Science Institute in Newlands on the second day of the Bok planning camp for Stormers players, Meyer said that De Villiers is also quick enough to play at No 13 instead of his usual inside centre…

The Lions form offers a King-sized opportunity 1 May 2012
A few weeks ago, ambitious sections of the South African rugby media jumped all over comments from former Wallabies coach and World Cup-winning Springboks consultant coach Eddie Jones.
There’s nothing new in that, I suppose. Unsurprisingly, it was relating to the ongoing dilemma the SARU have created for themselves by ‘guaranteeing’ a place in the 2013 Super Rugby competition for the Port Elizabeth-based Southern Kings.
